Rucking is walking

Rucking is hiking

Rucking is adding additional weight beyond your own body weight
This morning was an opportunity to get some rucking in and pictured below is my favorite rucking gear. Asolo hikers, lots of water, and a good backpack. Granted my additional weight was extra water bottles, pb & J, and only the return trip with a Walmart load in the pack, but we all start where we are at.
To embrace rucking instead of an easier mode of transporting oneself, it helps to consider the why behind it all.
Why would we choose to do this? Or as some might say, “What’s in it for me?”
Here’s just a few of the highlights:

- Adding weight to our walking increases strength to bones and muscles.
- Adding weight to our walking benefits our cardiovascular fitness.
- Adding weight to our walking adds to our quality of life.
The children pictured here are “rucking” in their natural state of play. We were built to carry loads – including one another – for a period of time.
Natural ways to go rucking…

This mother is rucking in her natural state of carrying her children and supplies as well.
What are some natural methods that come to mind for adding to your routine?

Why should I add weight to my walking?
Your body will thank you for providing the resistance.
You will feel stronger.
You will improve your health.
You will improve your mobility and balance for the benefit of the activities of daily living.
You can do this anytime, anywhere, and with things you already have.
There is no unnecessary cost involved.
Are those enough reasons to try rucking?
Begin Slowly
If you’ve arrived here on my Blog, hopefully you’ve passed through my philosophy being “slow is the way to go” and this is for so many reasons, and one of the most important being safety to ensure we are not hurting ourselves. So, if it’s been a minute, week, month, year(s), since your last basic walking routine, perhaps skip the added weight and just formulate a walking routine. After that you could build in some weight incrementally. I began rucking quite some time ago, but when taking time off it is felt! So go slow and check with your medical care provider before implementing any new exercise program.
